About Us

The Association for Rehabilitation and Reorientation of Women for Development (TERREWODE) was conceived by Alice Emasu Seruyange at age 16, after learning that among six of her girlfriends, two had suffered obstetric fistula and four had died from childbirth complications.

When Alice learned that obstetric fistula and the other childbirth injuries were preventable, she chose to raise awareness about women’s health and inequality through a career in journalism. She wrote about maternal health at a time when the maternal mortality rate in Uganda was high: 504 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Her work brought to main media attention on the barriers women and girls faced in accessing timely, respectful, and quality maternal health care. Over time, she came to believe that awareness alone was not enough. The campaign against obstetric fistula in Uganda needed to be led with survivors (former fistula patients), health workers, community volunteers, district leaders, and other stakeholders.

TERREWODE was established in 1999 to create nationwide awareness on obstetric fistula, advocate for women’s health and rights, support women and girls to receive quality treatment, and provide reintegration services to prevent recurrence of fistula and improve their livelihoods.

TERREWODE is now a leading non-government organization that has for the last 25 years championed the campaign to promote, protect, and provide obstetric fistula services, while advancing safe motherhood and empowering vulnerable women and girls in Uganda.

In 2019, TERREWODE commissioned Terrewode Women’s Community Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility that provides routine, holistic treatment, free of charge to women and girls with obstetric fistula and other childbirth injuries.
